Stars Reserves take title rematch with rally over Bellingham, 7-5

WISL Logo_150TACOMA, WA— Bellingham United FC returned to the scene of last year’s WISL Final to once again play the Tacoma Stars Reserves. It was a close, hard fought affair but in the end the Stars Reserves continued their home string of wins over the Hammers with a 7-5 victory before 231 fans at the Tacoma Soccer Center.

BUFC won the first half, 3-1. Tacoma got the first marker during a Hammers line change to take an early 1-0 lead on the first goal of the night from leading scorer Nate Ford. Then the visitors clamped down on defense while scoring three straight times before the break.Kurtis Pederson made it 1-1. Richard Henderson gave Bellingham a 2-1 lead before Kenny Parker got in on the action for a 3-1 Hammers advantage.

stars-reserveslogo-2A blue card near the end of the first half carried over to the start of the second helf with Tacoma on the powerplay. Nate Ford brought the Reserves to within 3-2, but the vistors responded right away with a goal from Nick Cashmere. Bellingham remained in control, 4-2.

Tacoma ran away the rest of the match, streaking to a 5-1 advantage over the last quarter and a half. Ford completed a hat trick by scoring the first three Tacoma goals of the night. It was 4-3 Hammers at the end of 3 quarters but the home team felt a change in momentum.

hammersThe 4th quarter belonged to Tacoma, and to Kyle Danielson. The Stars Reserves got level on a goal from Vince McCluskey (assist to Nate Ford.) They took the lead 5-4 when Danielson was assisted by Steve Mohn. Another Danielson goal made it 6-4. It seemed over for the Hammers until they fought back with a goal from player/coach Brendan Quilici.

6-5 was originally posted and tweeted as the final score. The official scoresheet reveals that a third goal from Kyle Danielson right as the buzzer sounded was allowed by the officials, making it a 7-5 win for Tacoma.
